Foot & Ankle Procedures

Your doctor may recommend injections or a surgical procedure if more conservative treatments like rest, physical therapy, orthotics, braces, casts or assistive devices fail to relieve your pain or restore mobility. Here are some of the foot and ankle procedures a doctor could recommend.

Foot Procedures

  • Bunionectomy: A surgery to remove a bunion and realign toes.
  • Plantar fasciotomy: A surgery to release tension in the fascia to relieve pain associated with plantar fasciitis.
  • Morton's neuroma surgery: Removal of a damaged nerve near the toes.
  • Big toe surgery: Procedures range from removal of damaged bone and cartilage to replacement of a portion or all of the toe.
  • Foot Reconstruction: Bones and tissue can be modified, removed, replaced or fused together to relieve pain and restore function.
  • Foot fracture repair: Pins, plates or screws may be needed to maintain the proper position of bones in server or complex bone breaks.
  • Amputation: In cases of poor circulation, infection or dead tissue the removal of a foot may be needed.

Ankle Procedures

  • Ankle arthroscopy: Minimally invasive surgery that uses a tiny camera and tools to examine or repair parts of the ankle.
  • Tendon repair: Typically, a ruptured tendon, including the Achilles, can be stitched back together or replaced.
  • Ankle fusion: A surgery to join or fuse bones together in an effort to relieve pain and inhibit further damage.
  • Fracture repairs: Pins, plates or screws may be needed to maintain the proper position of bones in server or complex breaks.
  • Total ankle replacement: Surgery to remove portions of the bone and joint damaged by arthritis and replace them with prosthetic implants.

Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Surgery

Foot and ankle problems may be caused by a deformity, damage to a tendon, broken bones or arthritis. The goal of reconstructive surgery is to relieve your pain and improve function of the foot or ankle. Reconstructive surgery may be recommended if more conservative treatments such as arch supports, physical therapy and medication fail to provide pain relief. One or more surgical procedures may be incorporated into a reconstructive surgery, depending on the severity of your condition. Procedures range from tendon repair and bone realignment to fusing one or more bones of the foot or ankle together. Your surgeon may also use pins, screws or plates to help support the foot or ankle, and correct alignment issues.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

If you undergo surgery, your recovery process will be monitored by care providers who adapt treatments to each patient's needs. Many patients who have orthopedic surgery may require:

  • Case management to help with a plan for follow-up care
  • Intensive therapy in the inpatient setting
  • Physical and occupational therapy in an outpatient setting

Therapists at our rehabilitation facility provide individualized physical and occupational therapy treatments based on a physician's order. Our goal is to help people overcome injuries in order to prevent surgery and to help post-surgery patients regain mobility so they can return to active lifestyles as soon as possible.
